The original Thieves oil recipe was created in the 15th Century by four French “thieves” during the Black Plague.
This herbal blend the spice merchants created was antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial and was said to protect the “thieves” from getting sick as they robbed black plague victim’s graves.
The “Thieves” were actually spice traders and merchants who traded cinnamon and clove buds all the way from India to Europe. When the Black Plague struck, international shipping and trade stopped, and the spice traders needed a way to support themselves. Thanks to their knowledge about the medicinal properties of the spices they traded, the French Thieves knew they wouldn’t get sick if they applied their knowledge of spices, vinegars and oils.
The King eventually found out about the Thieves and wanted to know why they weren’t getting sick. Four of the Thieves were caught and brought before the King. He gave them a choice: Share the secret as to why you are not catching the black plague or be burned at the stake.
As a result, the Thieves shared their oil blend secrets with the French King and in turn, the King spared their lives. Word quickly spread around town and the Thieves Oil recipe became a popular blend in most households to help ward off the black plague.
Thieves Oil was Found to Have a 99% Kill Rate Against Airborne Bacteria When Diffused.
The essential oils contained within this formula have been noted for anti-bacterial, anti-viral and antiseptic properties while stimulating the immune system, circulation and the respiratory system. According to research at Weber State University, Thieves Oil was found to have a 99% kill rate against airborne bacteria when diffused.
We use the best quality pure essential oils available and while essential oils are expensive they are well worth the expense and you only need a small amount. We take care to measure the oils exactly before blending together to a specific recipe.

Essential oils are more than an aroma, they may cause irritation if improperly used. We do not suggest using Thieves Oil in a bath or sauna.
note: Burning inferior essential oils or fake, synthetic oils will not give the same results and may be harmful as you have no idea what you will be breathing through diffuser air or applying to your body.
How To Use:
Diffuse for only short periods of time, 20 minutes at work or home
Diffuse using between 4 to 10 drops depending on the size of your diffuser and room or area where you are placing the diffuser. If you are in the room with the diffuser keep the time period to about 20 minutes.
Personally I place the diffuser in the living area first thing of a morning as this is the area we spend most of our time at home. I pop the diffuser on while I am out walking for about an hour and switch off when I get home. During the evening I place the diffuser in the bedroom for 30 minutes while we are in the living area. I find this pattern of diffusing suits us best as we are not breathing in direct diffuser air yet gaining the benefit if offers and the aroma is fresh, clean and welcoming. Some diffusers can be set to a time period, which is also what I use as it makes it easier to use and doesn’t matter if you forget about it being switched on. I also check to see if the essential oils need topping up, most of the time I only need to replace the essential oil every three days.
In Your Car
Add a few drops of French Thieves Oil to the mats in your car. The aroma is refreshing and will be the perfect help for when you need to go to shared, communal spaces such as the supermarket or get fuel (use gloves to push supermarket trollies and at the service station when handling the fuel pump). When you sit in your car you will be surrounded by the beneficial effects of the essential oils.
Topical Application of French Thieves Oil On The Body.
Body Application: Apply a few drops of essential oil or diluted in a base oil to the bottom of the feet or dilute with a few drops into a massage oil base (olive oil for example) for massaging into the areas under the arms and on the chest at the base of the neck.
Be Cautious: Test an area first to make sure your blend is not too strong for you, children or elderly and particularly for anyone with a respiratory illness, who it should help but in a mild form, just as you would use vapour rub.
Caution for pets – remember to consider animals to have a heightened sense of smell. Use diffusers in a room away from pets or check with the Vet first.
